66,000 Degree Seats To Be Eliminated In Telangana

Hyderabad: In what could become a massive overhaul to higher education in Telangana, 66,000 seats in various degree colleges across of the state belong to different universities would be cut down. Sources suggest there could be a halt in admissions this year in colleges that cannot fill up at least 25 per cent of the allotted number of students. The universities have already decided to shift the current students in these degree colleges to various other colleges. In this regard, all the universities have prepared a list of colleges with less than 25 per cent of the strength.

Among the colleges, there has not been a single admission in 51 colleges, while nearly 250 colleges in the state have less than 25 per cent of the strength. There are a total of 10,150 seats in colleges that have no students, while there are 25,285 seats in those colleges that have less than 25 per cent of the seats. Of the 25,285 seats, only 8,803 seats have been filled. The universities are pursuing the option of not conducting any admissions in these colleges.

Of all the universities with high vacancy of seats in Telangana, Kakatiya University holds the highest number of colleges with such numbers. In these colleges, only 4,047 seats have been filled out of 56,285 available seats. In Osmania University, only 1,731 students have been admitted out of 10,610 available seats.
