Mumbai: Swiping a card at a toll plaza proved costly for a 36-year-old man as he lost Rs87,000 from his bank account within two hours after he paid toll. Darshan Patil, who works as a sales manager, was on his way back home to Pune on Saturday and stopped at the Khalapur toll plaza. He swiped his card and paid Rs230.

“I paid R230 at 6.27pm and I received a message about the transaction. But around 8.31pm, I received a notification saying that a purchase worth Rs20,000 had been done with my card. Within minutes of that, I got six more messages of fraud transactions made through my debit card," said Patil.

He filed a complaint with Hadapsar police station in Pune and approached the bank as well. He suspects his privacy could have been compromised as he swiped his card at the plaza. "I entered the code myself. But I can't deny the possibility of any mischief done by those guys. The toll window was at the top and there were CCTV cameras overhead. It is crazy how the transactions were made without the OTP while the card was with me,” he adds.
